This looks really clean. The price seems decent, but what should I be concerned about with this model?

Everything but the engine and transmission.

The W163 is essentially a disposable car.

Engine should be sound, but I’d want to be sure the transmission has been serviced. Leather looks like it needs some food. Also, those wheels gotta go, stock wheels for this are much more tasteful and in proportion to the vehicle:

When the seller says 0-100 in 6 seconds, of course, he means km/h. I don’t know if the price is realistic or not.

wasn’t it just a tarted up Durango used as a place holder till they could throw out their own platform?

Doesn’t Tyler Hoover have one of these? If I’m not mistaken it was one of his more reliable cars except for the whole getting stolen thing.

As a general rule, I would avoid the early Alabama Mercs unless they’ve been babied. Those wheels are scaring me.

But a working 5.5L is supposed to be one of the better German V8 engines in recent memory. I saw the 2002 models getting built with my own eyes in a 2001 graduate operations management class trip that I personally arranged — the bodies came off one line, the frame from another, and the V8 engine (IIRC) was being hand built by two guys at a separate station. It was amazing to watch it all come together, especially back then. Pretty groundbreaking logistical operation.

Hand-built German V8's usually scare me, but I’ve not heard anything bad about these so far.

Is maintenance a nightmare? I had a Grand Cherokee (2000) and it wasn’t too bad other than replacing rotors all the time.

Neighbor had a normal ML from that era, stay far away. Everything went wrong at some point on it.
